My name is Mary Katherine Blackwood. We Have Always Lived in the Castle has a very straightforward plot and the "twist" is fairly predictable, being narrated the way it is, but because it's narrated the way it is, the plot is not the most important thing. I am eighteen years old, and I live with my sister Constance. Title: We Have Always Lived in the Castle Author: Shirley Jackson Published: 1962 Pages: 146. Today Shirley Jackson (1916-1965) is best recalled for the story The Lottery, originally published in 1948, and the novel THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE, published. Between this and Jeff Smith's Bone, I've been spoiling myself with good fiction this week. We Have Always Lived in the Castle is the story of Mary Katherine (“Merricat”) who lives with her sister Constance and her uncle Julian in their enormous and isolated house. 1995 was my Shirley Jackson year. Anyway, last night Joel and I went for a walk after dark, and I couldn't stop repeating to myself, in that high, mock-innocent tone, We have always lived in the castle, Bekah. We Have Always Lived in the Castle was the last book Jackson published before she died (somewhat tragically) three years later in 1965. I got this book from the library after reading a review on another book blog. Previously I'd only known her through "Charles" and "The Lottery"--school fare. I read six books by Jackson and two about her. We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson (2006) 214 pages.
